Tadweer Group reported that construction of the AlBihouth waste-to-energy facility in Abu Dhabi reached 90 per cent completion as of October 2026, with commissioning targeted within weeks. The company announced the milestone alongside successful completion of pressure tests on both of the facility's boilers, per a statement published on 29 October 2026.

Processing capacity and power generation#

The facility is designed to process approximately 900,000 tonnes of waste annually once operational. It has a power generation capacity of 80 MW, which will be fed into Abu Dhabi's electricity grid. Tadweer Group stated the plant will generate enough electricity to power around 52,000 homes. The facility burns waste to produce steam that drives a turbine generator.

Project structure and delivery timeline#

Shareholders in the facility include Tadweer Group, Marubeni Corporation of Japan, Switzerland-based Kanadevia Inova, and the Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport and Urban Development. Engineering, procurement and construction work is being delivered by a consortium of ALEC BUTEC and Kanadevia Inova, with early works starting in August 2024. Emirates Water and Electricity Company and Tadweer Group signed the concession agreement in March 2024.

Safety record and operational preparation#

The project team recorded six million working hours without a lost time injury as of the October 2026 announcement. Stefan Kipp, Chief Executive Officer of Al Bihouth Waste-to-Energy Facility, stated in the announcement that the priority remains maintaining coordination among all partners and preparing the facility for operations. The project team has previously indicated it is working towards full operations in summer 2027, though no operational start date was specified in the latest update.

Waste diversion context#

Tadweer Group diverted 37.7 per cent of Abu Dhabi's waste from landfill in 2025, per the October 2026 statement. Abu Dhabi has set a target of diverting 80 per cent of waste from landfill by 2031. AlBihouth is the emirate's first waste-to-energy plant. Tadweer Group, part of L'IMAD Holding, is the custodian of waste management in Abu Dhabi.
